Public Safety

The Public Safety group addressed various aspects of Newton’s public safety services (police, fire, emergency services, public health and homeland security). The group reviewed the condition and effectiveness of the City’s policies and personnel, as well as its buildings and equipment.

This group examined what the city is doing and not doing to optimize our energy consumption and environmental stewardship as a government and as a community.

Economic Development and Housing

This group addressed the potential for economic development in our community and the approach we should take to ensure that this development occurs in a manner that is consistent with smart growth principles, preserves the character of our villages and plans for all potential impacts like traffic, parking and school enrollment. This group also addressed Newton's need to plan for more and different affordable housing.

This topic examined the state of Newton's physical assets — buildings, roads, equipment — and how to best plan and fund maintenance and modernization.

Education

This group addressed the promotion of quality public education by examining how great cities and towns support superior education systems. It focused on the role the Mayor and the city can play in ensuring our schools are top flight.

Community Life

Community Life addressed all ways in which we enjoy each others company and the beautiful space here in Newton. That includes our parks, our lakes, our sports fields and courts, the arts and cultural centers, opportunities for volunteering, and civic engagement.

Mission Statement

To hold a summit with a representative, diverse group of citizens and experts focused on critical areas of city life – education, public safety, energy and environment, economic development, infrastructure, and community life. The intent of the summit is to establish where Newton is now in each area and develop preliminary agreement on selected short- and longer-term goals for the Setti Warren administration.
