NEWTON FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION, LOCAL 863 ENDORSES SETTI WARREN FOR MAYOR, CITY OF NEWTON
Over the past several months we had the pleasure of meeting with four of the five mayoral candidates, including both Setti Warren and Ruth Balser. We would like to thank all of the candidates who took the time to meet with us and we are grateful for the respect and courtesy each candidate showed us during the campaign.
This decision and the process that led to our endorsement, was one we did not take lightly. After numerous meetings, station tours and conversations with each candidate, one candidate proved to have the experience, vision and ability to bring about progressive change to the Newton Fire Department and the City of Newton as a whole.
It is with great excitement and honor that the Newton Fire Fighters Association, Local 863 announces their endorsement of Setti Warren for Mayor of the City of Newton.
Setti’s experience as Regional Director of FEMA gives him a unique and impressive understanding of public safety, emergency response and emergency preparedness.
Setti has consistently demonstrated an open mind and willingness to receive input. He believes the best approach to improving Public Safety is to work hand in hand with the men and women who protect the City of Newton on a day to day basis.
In addition, the following are some of the public safety issues Setti has specifically laid out in his platform for Mayor:
- Explore techniques, equipment and policies used by other municipalities and public agencies that promote public safety.
- Ensure that our fire trucks and stations are adequately maintained.
- Ensure that police and fire response times are up to national standards.
- Develop a well-honed emergency response plan.
- Treat our public safety unions with respect and negotiate in good faith even as we make tough financial decisions.
- Use NewStat to identify and prioritize needs, and concentrate resources where the needs are greatest.
Setti Warren has shown a true passion and understanding for public safety. He will do the hard work required to acquire the best tools, equipment, training and technology, to ensure every citizen of our great city can feel safe.

In response to today‚s endorsement by the Newton Fire Fighters Association, Local 863, Setti Warren issued the following statement:
"I am honored to have the endorsement of the Newton Fire Fighters," Warren said. "These brave men and women put their lives in harms' way every day to protect the residents of Newton. They have, for too long, done so without proper equipment and preparedness training. I am all too familiar, from my experience at FEMA, with the importance of first responder readiness. As Mayor, I will make sure we give all our public safety professionals the support they deserve."
