Letters to the Editor from Rob Gifford and Setti Warren

September 30, 2009

After ending my own campaign, I sat down with both of the candidates for Mayor to determine who would most effectively address the important priorities facing Newton - closing the fiscal gap, fixing our crumbling infrastructure, revitalizing village centers and commercial areas and re-building trust in city government.

In every respect, Setti is - hands down - the best candidate.

He understands the challenges we face and speaks in very clear terms about the steps he will take as Mayor. He understands the complexity of the issues and how interactions with the Board and the School Committee will need to change if we are to live up to our full potential. And his open and approachable personal style will allow him to work with Newton's many stakeholders to make positive change and rebuild trust in our government. He "gets it" down to the last detail, and is unafraid to speak in unambiguous terms about the tough trade-offs ahead for Newton. His message is consistent and undiluted, regardless with whom he is talking to.

I look at Setti’s life experience and see much to be excited about: his deep roots in Newton; his government service in the Clinton White House, leading the NE office of FEMA, and working with Senator Kerry; as well as (and perhaps most importantly) his military service in Iraq. While his opponent should be applauded for her legislative experience, Setti has the executive leadership skills needed to be a successful Mayor.

I want to thank all the voters of Newton for coming out in record numbers for the preliminary election. Your passion for this City is what makes it such a great City.

And to those residents who voted for me and to those who worked so hard on Election Day for our campaign – a special thanks for your support.

Over the course of the last nine months, I have knocked on more than 10,000 doors. I have met with residents in nearly 70 living rooms and at 25 separate forums. I have heard the same thing over and over again. Newton is a remarkable community; a truly special place that is not living up to its full potential. To do so, Newton needs new leadership.

Tuesday, at the polls, the voters of Newton took an important first step to make that happen.

This election is about the future of Newton. It is about electing a Mayor who has the skills and experience required to heal our wounds, find common ground, and lead this city forward now. I believe I am that leader. I have a breadth of experience at all levels of government including my work with the Community Preservation Committee right here in Newton. And I will bring a fresh perspective to the challenges facing our City.

I look forward to the spirited campaign ahead and to winning in November. Give our campaign a call at 617.795.0579 or via email to info@settiwarren.com. I look forward to earning your support.
