Newton Gives; Newton Reflects and Newton Celebrates
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 14, 2009
Newton, December 14th – Mayor-Elect Setti Warren announced today a three-part program to launch his administration on the theme of bringing Newton together. As he said throughout the campaign, “I believe that we can come together and work together to move Newton forward again.”
Spanning two days, the festivities will begin with a service project entitled “Newton Gives”. Organized by newly elected Ward 5 alderman, John Rice in conjunction with Newton Community Service Center, the Parks and Recreation Department as well as several local charities, the service fair will take place at Hyde Center and Playground beginning at 11 am on Thursday, December 31st. Residents will be able to participate in a series of initiatives including the building of a skating rink for the Newton Highlands playground and the packing of gift boxes for the troops stationed overseas at the holidays. In addition, Setti is asking residents to bring canned goods and gently used childrens’ books and clothes for those in need. Everyone is encouraged to stop by before 3 pm.
On the morning of January 1, Setti and his family will join members of the clergy for an ecumenical service entitled “Newton Reflects”. Organized by Rabbi Eric Gurvis (Temple Shalom), Reverend Howard Haywood (Myrtle Baptist Church, Retired) and Reverend Richard Malmberg (The Second Church of Newton), the program will take place at the Murray Room at the Yawkey Center on Boston College’s Lower Campus beginning at 10 am and will consist of readings, music and a sermon delivered by Reverend John Connolly (Sacred Heart Church). Residents interested in attending the one-hour service should sign up on the Setti Warren website (www.settiwarren.com). Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.
Join our new Mayor, the Board of Alderman, the School Committee and their families for the Swearing in Ceremony, which will take place at 12 noon on Friday, January 1 in the Board of Alderman Chambers.
The festivities will conclude after the swearing in with an Open House at City Hall entitled “Newton Celebrates”. Organized by Abby Rordorf, Linda Plaut, Anne Larner and Pat Johnson, residents are invited to join Setti and his family for an afternoon of fun and food reflecting Newton’s past, present and future. Historic Newton will be providing pictures and film of Newton's Past while local restaurants (including City Hall’s own Vanessa’s Cafe) will be supplying food that reflects Newton’s rich Present diversity. Musical groups and performers of all genres will be entertaining guests throughout the afternoon (until 5 pm) with a particular emphasis on performances by young people of all ages representing Newton’s Future.
