Mayor-elect Warren will be responsible for negotiating contracts with city employees. We asked the group what the key issues would be in these negotiations and how we might be able to save money while maintaining our commitment to excellence. The group suggested:
Looking at the GIC and publicly explain its pros and cons.
Recognizing the trends in union negotiations and managing all union contracts with similar mindsets, even though they are separate dialogues.
Offering wellness incentives to employees.
Offering plans with higher deductibles and health savings accounts.
Seeking out more services in lieu of taxes.
Getting interns, students, and pro bono workers when we can.
Insuring with defined benefits as opposed to defined contributions.
Reducing coverage for retirees.
Benchmarking ourselves against private sector standards.
Communicating total compensation packages clearly to employees.
