Creating a Newton Volunteer Corps
Mayor-elect Warren would like to create a Newton Volunteer Corps aimed at increasing volunteering in the City and tapping into resident talent to expand participation on the numerous boards and commissions. The group recommended that we:
- Make some really FUN service event whenever possible
- Build upon Newton Serves events and participation
- Make the volunteer efforts noticeably effective
- Promote Board, Commission, and Committees openings on the website, perhaps including descriptions of what each does to foster new interest
- Give some orientation training or a training plan for Board Committee and Commission members and officials
- Improve transparency of the Boards, Committees, and Commissions
- Create one starting point for all people interested in volunteering in Newton
- Get a broad, diverse group of resident from across the city involved
- Use volunteers to advance administration goals i.e. ask volunteers to help improve the website
- Create a system for nonprofits to give input to the city goals, recruit talent from their members
- Use community newspaper, community robo-calls to reach out to people
- Send out a city newsletter that includes updates from the Newton Volunteer Corps
- Use social networking sites to increase participation
- Work with Area Councils on local matters
